NEDERLAND — Police in Nederland have identified a 17-year-old male they believe brandished a handgun on the Nederland High School campus, noting the investigation continues.

The 17-year-old, whose name has not been released, is a Nederland resident but not a student, Police Chief Gary Porter said.

“During the course of the investigation we recovered the handgun at the residence of the 17-year-old,” Porter said.

On Thursday, a student was being picked up in the student parking lot when another student witnessed a person in that vehicle wave a revolver around. The witness alerted campus administration and police immediately began investigating.

“When it was reported we had other Nederland police officers there doing their daily walk-through at the school and something had happened, not only would we have had the SRO (School Resource Officers) but patrol officers there,” Porter said.

Police still don’t know why the suspect, as Porter referred to him, brought the revolver to the high school. The chief previously said he did not believe the weapon was being used in a threatening way.

Police officers routinely patrol Nederland Independent School District campuses. There will be increased police presence at schools while the incident is under investigation, Rene Latiolais, communications coordinator for NISD, said.

The 17-year-old was not taken into custody by police ad the investigation will continue.

“We will put together a case and submit it to the D.A.’s office,” Porter said.
