The pavilion in downtown Port Arthur will be the scene of a free Festival de la Raza — Latin festival, with food, music, dancing, activities for children and more from 11 a.m. Sunday to midnight.

The event is hosted by Exitos 100.9 Internet radio based out of Orange, announcer Jose “El Chontes” Gutierrez said.

The family-oriented festival features Tropical Panama, La Nueva Maravilla, Junior Montiel y sus Alegres del Rancho, Magia Loca, Elaina, and more.

Ten food vendors will be on hand and more than 20 businesses will also be on site.

“We would like to invite people to come and enjoy the festival with their family and enjoy our group, have fun, bring the kids and enjoy the other groups as well,” Juan Vasquez, singer and bass player for La Nueva Maravilla, said.

La Nueva Maravilla is from San Benito, a town in the Rio Grande Valley. The musical group stays busy — they will travel to Dallas today for a wedding, then to Port Arthur on Sunday.

Local businesswoman Zulema Escobedo also welcomes the public to come out.

“It is a family event and there is no charge to just show up and check it out,” Escobedo said.

The food is a likely draw for some festivalgoers.

“I recommend people come out and try some more traditional Latin foods,” she said. “Cuban, Venezuelan, Honduran, Guatemalan, Puerto Rican …”

In addition, there will be plenty of activities for children: Mechanical bull, jumpers, little train, little cars and more.

Gutierrez said it’s hard to say how many people will attend the festival, but he is prepared for more than 1,000.
