Lamar State College Port Arthur is advertising a free two-story home located on campus. The only catch — it must be moved completely at the buyer’s expense.

Gerry Dickert, public information coordinator for LSCPA, said the house was left to two gentlemen after a relative’s passing and later sold to the college. The house is located adjacent to the cosmetology facility and next to the pavilion area west of the Gates Memorial Library at 1340 Procter St.

“The cost of demolition will be quite a bit for the college, so we’re looking to see if anyone is interested in taking the home, either in one piece or in pieces,” Dickert said. “The only caveat is that they take it all.”

The two-story home boasts a living room with a fireplace, dining room, kitchen, utility room, bathroom and small eating area on the first floor. The upstairs has four bedrooms, a bathroom and the backside of the second story has a sunroom.

“The living room and dining room are carpeted and the kitchen has linoleum,” Dickert said. “There is no central air or heat in the house. The carpet throughout would have to be replaced. It’s old, worn and dirty. The floors seem solid, though the front porch has a weak spot leading into the front door.”

The house was built in the 1940s or 1950s, but has no historic significance that has been noted.

Purchasing Director Maria Garcia said the house is first come, first served.

“It’s a free house,” she said. “We bought the property. So, whoever wants to move it can at their own expense. We just need the information on the company moving the house and make the insurance company meets the requirements.

“We don’t have a purpose for the house. We don’t need it so we are trying to clear the land.”

Dickert said there are currently no specific plans for how the property will be used once the home is moved or demolished.
