What a difference a week made for Chris Stroud!

After badly missing the cut with rounds of 76-78 in his 2019-20 PGA Tour debut at the Safeway Open, the Port Neches-Groves ex rebounded with a four-under-par 67 in the opening round of the Shriners Charity for Children Open at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas. With players still on the course, Stroud was tied for ninth, four strokes behind leader Nick Taylor.

It was a good day all the way around for Pea Patch alums, as Andrew Landry bounced back from a slow start to post a 68. Landry was two over through six holes, then poured in five birdies the rest of the way. He was tied for 22nd.

Stroud and Landry had several things in common. They both made five birdies, they both hit lots of fairways and greens and both could have been better with the putter.

Stroud’s longest birdie putt was 6 feet, 4 inches and the combined length of his five birdies was 23-3. He did, however, sink an 18-foot par save early in the round. Stroud hit 12 of 14 fairways, 15 of 18 greens in regulation, birdied all three of Summerlin’s par 5s and saved par three of four times from bunkers.

Landry’s five birdies totaled 34 feet, 11 inches, thanks to one from 19-10.

Like Stroud, he birdied all the par 5s. He hit 11 of 14 fairways, 16 of 18 greens and ran off three consecutive birdies from holes 8 through 10.

The strokes gained putting stat showed both players could have gone lower. Stroud was 64th while Landry was 99th.
