Actually, I like the rain! I know, you’re thinking, “Are you crazy?” But, if you think about it in a more positive way, you’ll see its good qualities.

Mike and I bought a 55-acre farm in the state of Washington in the 60s with a plan to retire on it, raising hay, animals, food and 3 children. But God had a different plan and we wouldn’t change that for anything.

It rained almost every day, so we did everything in the rain. Our children flourished, enjoying dogs, cats, horses, 4-H animals and state fairs, plus they helped with firewood, hay harvesting, driving old trucks out in a field, laughing and mowing lawns around the house they called “Bonanza” because they were so big. Retiring on a farm is a LOT of work, but we were so strong and happy about our chores, trying to continue to write our music, but having to stop and chase pigs and horses that got out of their pens made it a challenge, for sure.

The rain made that part of the country so green and lush as it watered everything constantly. It was a little tricky trying to bundle up our hay. The people in that area joked, “We don’t bale our hay, we can it!”  We also had a gravity spring with fresh, cold water that never ran dry. The farmers all over this country of America need rain on their crops for nourishment and growth.

Rain also kept the air so clean, and it does temporarily in cities, but it seems some cities don’t have very good drainage systems which causes more flooding than should happen. When we were in Holland, which is much like New Orleans being below sea level, they had incredible drainage with their canals and knew how to work with water.

There are a lot of songs written about rain but not so fun like “Raindrops Keep Fallin’” and “Rainy Day in Georgia,” but my husband, Mike, wrote a song about rain to sing and pray when threatening storms come, telling it to “peace, be still.”

So, you see, rain is necessary for many reasons and can be soothing to hear on a tin roof, or if you’re not driving with a rush, and always remember, “You’re waterproof.” Enjoy the rain.
