Weather halts Sabine Pass football, PNG volleyball from playing

Published 8:29 am Thursday, September 19, 2019

Thanks to the effects of tropical depression Imelda, no Mid- or South County football teams will be in action this week.

Sabine Pass’s varsity home game against the Orangefield junior varsity scheduled for tonight was canceled early this morning. No potential makeup date has been announced.

Memorial, Nederland and Port Neches-Groves are already on their bye week before they start district play.

Sabine Pass (0-3) is playing an all non-district slate this season, pulling out of UIL competition only in football following an injury-shortened 2018 season to address concerns with participation. The Sharks’ next game is scheduled for Sept. 27 at home against Lutheran North in a rematch of their Sept. 6 meeting in Houston.

Following an Oct. 4 game at KIPP Houston High, Sabine Pass has open dates for the weekends of Oct. 11-Nov. 1. Its season finale is Nov. 8 at home against Galveston O’Connell.

Port Neches-Groves tabled its varsity volleyball match at Cleveland once again due to Imelda. The Rock-A-Noos (10-16), who have not yet begun District 21-5A play, and Cleveland’s Indians were set to make up a match that was originally scheduled for Tuesday, when travel concerns forced the original postponement.

“We will evaluate the conditions daily and make a decision that puts everyone’s safety first,” PNG coach Brittany Fruge said. “As of right now the match date and time [with Cleveland] is TBD.”

No word has been given on the status of PNG’s Friday match at Dayton.
