The Port Acres Public Action group is extending its second annual Picnic at Eagles Park to all of the Port Arthur community this year.

The event will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday on the corner of 59th St. and Hazel St. in Port Acres.

Gloria Sanchez, one of the directors of Port Acres Public Action, said the committee wants to include the community outside of Port Acres in order to bring residents and businesses together for a day of fun outdoors.

“We wanted the community to come out because sometimes we lose the opportunity to meet new people,” she said. “With technology, cell phones and IPads nowadays most people don’t know their neighbors anymore. The parks are a good place to meet.”

Sanchez said she wants the children in the city to learn to be together and be more outgoing.

“Sometimes we feel like we need to go back and try to make people be more sociable and talk to each other,” she said. “Everyone is welcome to come, have fun and hang out with us.”

The picnic includes free lunch and drinks. Hot dogs, chips, cupcakes and drinks will be provided. A sno-cone truck will also be available for kids.

The event is in partnership with the Port Arthur Parks and Recreation Department and will kickoff with a tree planting ceremony at 2 p.m.

“We try to work together to make the park in Port Acres nice and we want the community to be a part of that process,” Sanchez said. “(Park and Recreations) is also bringing games for the kids and working with us to have a great day.”

The Port Arthur Police and Fire Department will also be in attendance.

“Kids can look inside the fire truck and speak with the firefighters,” Sanchez said. “People can also talk to the police. We want the kids to be friends and start a good relationship with the police from a young age.”

Sanchez said the committee hopes the Port Arthur and Port Acres communities will come together for this event and make new friends.

“We want to put the city together, we don’t want there to be a division,” she said. “Come meet our community and bring the kids out to play.”
