Both Korien Burrell and James Wilson rushed for over 100 yards, leading Beaumont United to a convincing 35-6 win over Memorial in non-district football action Friday night at Memorial Stadium.

Burrell led all rushers with 116 yards and Wilson added 112. Quarterback Zemiah Vaughn added 53 yards on the ground as well, helping the Timberwolves total 325 yards rushing for the game. Vaughn also completed 4 of 7 passes for 84 yards. Wilson also added two catches for 60 yards.

“Some unforced errors and some missed opportunities,” said Memorial coach Brian Morgan after the game. “We would have a big play and then have a holding or illegal block penalty erase it. Special teams wise, we had a chance to make some big plays. They muffed a punt and we didn’t get it. They caught a punt and we had him wrapped up and let him go and then he scores. That was a big play in the game.

“We played a good team, United is a very good team. I was impressed with them going in to the game and impressed now.”

The loss ended Memorial’s 13-game home regular season winning streak. It also snapped a seven-game winning streak against Beaumont ISD teams.

Sanders led the Titans with 77 yards rushing and one TD. He completed 8 of 19 passes for 71 yards and threw two interceptions. Branden Chaney added 62 yards rushing.

“We knew they (United) had a good front and we would block them here and there, but then we would have a negative play and get behind the chains,” said Morgan of the offense’s inability to find some rhythm. “Every time we did hit a big play it seemed to get called back. We definitely have some things to work on.”

Trailing 14-6, Memorial received the kickoff to start the third quarter. However, United forced a quick three-and-out. On the ensuing punt, Chandler Rivers fielded the ball at his own 26 and raced 74 yards for a touchdown to extend United’s lead to 21-6 with 10:38 left in the third quarter. The Titans looked to have Rivers tackled after a short gain, but Rivers was able to break free and race in for the score.

The Timberwolves added to their lead early in the fourth quarter. Burrell sprinted off left tackle and raced 69 yards for a touchdown to make the score 28-6. The short two-play drive was set up after Memorial was stopped on downs.

“I thought the defense played well at times. They’re a good offensive team,” said Morgan. “They have some good running back and their quarterback is a super athlete. We just didn’t play good enough as a team to win.”

United (3-0) started the scoring on its second possession of the game on a Wilson 1-yard run. That capped a nine-play, 66-yard drive. Wilson had two 16-yard runs on the drive. Vaughn completed an 11-yard pass to Julius Stelly that gave the Timberwolves first-and-goal at the 3. Wilson scored two plays later to give United a 7-0 lead.

Memorial (1-2) broke through with a scoring drive of its own late in the first quarter. Sanders hit Ned for an 18-yard completion and Chaney followed with 7-yard run. Sanders called his own number and out sprinted the United defense to the goal line for a 50-yard touchdown run. The extra-point was no good to make the score 7-6.

Memorial had a promising drive going early in the second quarter. Sanders rushed for 15 and them completed a 12-yard pass to Ned that put the ball at the 49. A pass interference penalty on the Timberwolves moved the ball the United 24. A fumbled exchange between Sanders and Chaney turned the ball over to United.

The Timberwolves followed with a sustained drive all the way to the Titans 1. Most of the damage came on the ground as Wilson rushed five times for 41 yards and Korien Burrell rushed three times for 21 yards. Vaughn completed a 13-yard pass to Qaiyyim Abdel to give United first and goal at the 1. A fumbled snap was recovered by the Titans Kareem Guillott to thwart the scoring chance.

United‘s defense forced a quick three-and-out and took advantage of the resulting good field position. Starting at the Titans 49, Vaughn hit Wilson down the left sideline for 48 yards to the Memorial 1. Vaughn scored two plays later on a quarterback sneak to make the score 14-6 with 1:05 left in the second quarter.

“We don’t have a game next Friday, but it’s definitely not going to be an off week for us,” said Morgan. “It’s a get better week. We have a lot of things fundamentally that everybody needs to improve on. It’s all three phases of the game. We have to block better, tackle better, and throw better. We’ve got a lot of work to do.”
