Weather might be the only thing that attempts to keep our young students down.

Depending on which forecaster or website prognosticator you turn to, the prediction for Saturday calls for a high temperature approaching 90 degrees and rain chances near 50 percent.

Any evening downpour would throw a wrench into a party that is 100 years in the making.

The Nederland Independent School District turns 100 this academic year, and a large birthday party planned Saturday is open to the community.

The Back-to-School Bash event is from 3-7 p.m. behind Bulldog Stadium and promises bouncy houses, obstacle courses and plenty of crafts.

Organizers promise hamburgers, pizza, tacos, soda and water.

The stage will also feature numerous family friendly performances that will keep the party jumping as the afternoon turns to evening.

The event is sure to maintain the good vibes that have taken hold of our community with the start of another school year.

The majority of area students attend class in school districts for Port Arthur, Port Neches-Groves and Nederland. With each campus revving up in the past week, there is no time like the present to support our students, whether they are family or not.

PAISD Superintendent Mark Porterie recently said it best when expressing to local readers that he understands how much work is still left to do as his district moves forward in educating local children.

“The progress made last year energizes us to do more and inspires us to look forward to raising the bar to the next level,” Porterie told The Port Arthur News in a story that published Saturday.

“Our principals along with central office, board members and parents are committed to addressing these areas to reach the goal of excellence within our district.”

Total excellence can be a near impossible goal to attain, but one that must always be pursued.

So, please, take some time this weekend or in the weeks ahead to support your local school district. And, if possible, try to show support for others, as well.

It’s our students who benefit in the long run.
