Sitting on the cut line after a double bogey and two bogeys in his first 10 holes Friday, Andrew Landry went on a birdie tear that saw him finish the second round of the FedEx Cup Northern Trust Open in Jersey City, New Jersey, closer to the lead than the cut.

The Port Neches-Groves ex birdied his final four holes and six of the last seven at Liberty National Golf Club for a stunning 67 that saw him climb into a tie for 15th at 135. That’s five shots behind leader Dustin Johnson, who shot 67 for 130. The cut was 141.

Thanks to the blazing finish, Landry put himself in position to get into the top 70 in the FedEx standings and qualify for the second playoff event next week at Medinah in Chicago. After starting the week No. 123, his current projection is 77. He’ll need to finish closer to the top 10 to advance.

While Landry was having perhaps his most memorable day of the 2018-19 season, fellow PNG ex Chris Stroud saw his season come to an end without hitting a shot. Following a first round 76, Stroud withdrew with a back injury.

Landry, who put himself behind the 8-ball when he drove into the water and took a double bogey on the fifth hole, wound up making eight birdies. After taking a bogey 5 on the 10th hole, he made sevens 3s and one 4 the rest of the way, capping the comeback with a 22-foot birdie putt on 18.

The putt that really got him rolling was a bomb from 37-10 on the 15th hole. Reflective of precision iron play, the longest of his other six birdies was 5-3. Two of his stats that stood out were being No. 2 in strokes gained around the green and No. 4 in putts per greens in regulation.

Landry followed up the double bogey at 5 with a birdie from 5-3 at 6, but gave it right back with a bogey at 7. He rebounded with a birdie from 4-3 at 8, then lost that with the bogey at 10. Following a par at 11, the birdie barrage started on 12.

Earlier in the day another Port Neches-Groves ex was making noise in Mississippi. Recent Baylor graduate Braden Bailey shot a 4-under-par 66 in the third round of the APT Taco Bell Classic at Beau Pre Golf Club in Natchez to move into a tie for second place. Bailey, on rounds of 70-66-68, sits at 204, and trails leader Wesley Hunter by four strokes.

Playing in his first APT event, Bailey made four of his six birdies on the back nine to stay within striking distance of Hunter, who also shot 68.
