BABE RUTH WORLD SERIES: Mid-County faces doubleheader

Published 5:08 pm Friday, August 2, 2019

The first pitch between Mid-County and Onondaga, New York, was never taken Friday, but it’s expected to Saturday.

The Babe Ruth 16- to 18-year-old World Series opener for both teams has been rescheduled to noon Saturday, with Mid-County taking on Vancouver, Washington, at 2 p.m.

Heavy rain in Mobile, Alabama, washed out the remainder of the first day of the Babe Ruth 16- to 18-year-old World Series. Jacobs Field at the University of Mobile was tarped at about 2:30 p.m., the scheduled start time for Mid-County’s game.

By that time, Crown Point, Indiana, and Bakersfield, California, reached the 13th inning with the score tied at 5-5, but the game has since been delayed.

Each team was scheduled to play four pool games — Mid-County is in the “National League” pool with Onondaga, Vancouver, Crown Point and Bakersfield, with the top three in each pool advancing to tournament play starting Wednesday.

The players are staying in host houses instead of a hotel, per Babe Ruth League tradition, but Mid-County manager Ben Rogers said if possible he might get them together for a light practice to stay game ready.

A home run derby was held Thursday, with pitcher Noah Gregory representing Mid-County. Gregory did not homer, Rogers said, but he hit one off the wall.

Mid-County (9-0), the Southwest Regional champion, is chasing its second World Series championship in three years. The host Alabama Rawdogs are the defending champions.
