Chris Stroud was not able to go on the birdie barrage he needed to challenge the leaders in the Barracuda Classic on Sunday, but the Groves native walked away with the satisfaction of playing four solid round at Montreux Golf Club.

Stroud closed with seven points in the Stableford format to finish with plus-33 for the week. That was good to tie for 15th and a projection to No. 91 in FedEx Cup points. The final event of the PGA Tour regular season is the Wyndham Classic starting Thursday in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Rookie Collin Morikawa, six weeks removed from playing in the NCAA championships, won the tournament with 47 points.

It was the third consecutive strong showing for Stroud in the Barracuda. He won it in 2017, then tied for seventh last year as defending champion. Had the event been contested in stroke play, he would have posted rounds of 67-69-69-69 for 274.

Fellow Groves native Andrew Landry was cut after the second round. He came back from a minus-6 round to shoot 12 Friday, but his plus-6 was two away from the cut line.

Unlike in earlier rounds, Stroud was not sharp enough with his iron play to create multiple good birdie looks. Three of his four birdies came on par-5 holes, and two of those were from 14-10 and 15-5. His lone birdie on a par-4 came after he drove to within 15 feet on the 14th, then two-putted. His other birdie came from inside three feet on the par-5 second.

Elsewhere in golf on Sunday, Lamar exes MJ Daffue and Dawie van der Walt finished T15 and T23 in the Korn Ferry Tour Price Clutter Charity Championship and PNG grad Braden Bailey closed with a 71 for 282 and a tie for 38th in the Cobank Colorado Open.

It was Bailey’s first professional tournament.
