PGA TOUR: Chris Stroud starts well in Reno points tournament

Published 8:57 pm Thursday, July 25, 2019

Chris Stroud was moving methodically up the leaderboard late Thursday afternoon when lighting suspended the first round of the Barracuda Championship at Montreux Golf Club in Reno, Nevada.

In an event played under a Stableford format — 5 points for eagle, 2 for birdie, 0 for par, minus-1 for bogey and minus-3 for double bogey — Stroud was tied for 14th with 8 points when play was stopped with the Port Neches-Groves ex having completed 15 holes.

Stroud got to 8 by rolling in four short birdie putts — 4 feet, 7 inches; 2-8; 5-0 and 6-11 — while making no bogeys. He’d also missed birdies from 6-1, 10-5, 9-5 and 10-4 in a round that was almost all fairways and greens. When play was suspended, he’d hit 11 of 12 fairways and 14 of 15 greens.

The news was not so good for the other PNG ex in the field.

Andrew Landry, on the outside looking in for the FedEx playoffs, made only one birdie, had a double bogey and took bogeys on four of his final five holes to finish minus-6. If it had been stroke play, Landry would have posted a 78.

The first day leader, after shooting 63, was David Lingmerth with 18 points. Lingmerth sank nine birdies and did not have a bogey on his card. Tyrone van Aswegen and Robert Streb were both in at plus 13.
