Filing for a spot on the ballot for the upcoming November election begins today (July 22) and runs through Aug. 19.

Currently there are two seats each up on Port Neches and Groves city councils and Port Neches-Groves Independent School District’s board of trustees.

PNGISD

In PNGISD, the Place 4 seat currently held by Lana Parker and Place 5 seat held by Brandon Cropper are up for grabs.

Parker retired from the school board in December after serving the Place 2 spot for 91/2 years, two of them as president. Newcomer Dustin Marsh won the seat and Parker went into retirement of sorts from the school board until she was called to serve in Place 4 after then trustee Mark Holmes quit in April.

Parker was not available for comment Friday as to whether she would run to keep the seat.

Cropper earned his seat in 2016 when he defeated longtime trustee Rodney Balsamo. Cropper was not available for comment Friday.

The terms for trustees are for three years and there is no fee to file.

Candidates can file for the Place 4 or Place 5 seat at the PNGISD Administration Building, 620 Avenue C, Port Neches.

The administration office’s summer hours are:

June 3 to July 26, Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., closed Fridays

After July 26 the office will be open until 4 p.m. Fridays and on Aug. 19 it will be open until 5 p.m.

Port Neches city

In Port Neches, the seats held by Place 1 councilmember Chris McMahon and Place 2 councilmember Adam Anders are open.

Anders said he plans to run for reelection.

McMahon was not available for comment.

Applicants must live in the city at least one year prior to the preceding election and there is a $100 filing fee. In lieu of the fee the city will accept a petition signed by a minimum of 25 qualified voters in the city.

Seats are at-large.

Groves city

The terms for Ward 1 Councilmember Chris Borne and Ward 3 Councilmember Sidney Badon are expiring and both have expressed an interest in seeking reelection.

Borne was appointed to the seat after former Councilman Cross Coburn lost a recall election in November. Borne said he would run for election.

Coburn, however, has decided to sit this election cycle out as he focuses on helping the city and those who want to recall the mayor, Brad Bailey, as well as take time for school, work and his own personal life.

“I plan to put myself out there again, just not this time around,” Coburn said. “I think the people need a voice and I’m taking time to mend mine.”

Longtime councilmember Badon said he would run for reelection.

Terms for council seats are for two years and there is a $25 filing fee. Interested applicants must reside in the city at least six months preceding and live in the ward they represent.
