University of Texas grad Dylan Frattelli outgunned the Port Neches-Groves duo of Andrew Landry and Chris Stroud Sunday in the final round of the John Deere Classic, but it was still a season-changing day for the pride and joy of Groves’ Pea Patch.

Landry, who didn’t have his A game for the first time all week, closed with a two-under-par 69 and a total of 266 that was good for outright third.

More importantly, he was projected to jump 50 places to 121 in the FedEx Cup standings. The top 125 make the playoffs.

Stroud, shook off a costly double bogey on the 11th hole and rallied with four birdies down the stretch for a 67 and a 267 that tied for fourth. He climbed from 121 to 96 on FedEx points, locking up his tour card for next season.

Frattelli, meanwhile, birdied his first three holes at the TPD Deer Run layout, took the lead for good when Landry made a bogey on six and never wobbled. He went out in 31, signed off on a 64 and finished at 263.

That was two shots better than Russell Henley who fired the tournament’s low round of 61 to post a 265 before the leaders made the turn.

Landry, early on, looked like the man to beat. He started birdie, birdie to take the lead outright and looked relaxed and in control. But errant drives led to bogeys on 6 and 9, he got burned with a couple of bad bounces and went through a stretch of 10 holes with a lone birdie.

The former Arkansas star ended that stretch with a two-putt birdie at 14, narrowly missing an eagle. Unfortunately, one of the aforementioned bad breaks led to a bogey on the next hole and he was pretty much playing for second. When he didn’t birdie the relatively easy, par 5, 17th, second was out of reach, too.

Landry did sink a 10-footer on 18 to break a tie with Stroud and Collin Morkawa and take outright third. In a year that has seen him struggle mightily with putting, it was his first finish inside the top 25 in a full field event.

Prior to Sunday, his season best was T28 in the Desert Classic back in February.

For Stroud, who came in having failing to make it to the weekend in nine consecutive individual stroke play tournaments, the tie for fourth was his fourth top 10 of the year and second highest finish to a T2 at the Corales Puntacana in April. The T4 came after he failed to make it to the weekend in nine consecutive tournaments.

A desperately needed high finish looked like it might be slipping away when the Lamar ex hooked his tee shot into the penalty area on No. 11. That led to a double bogey and dropped him from a tie for fourth to a tie for 20th.

Showing impressive resiliency, however, Stroud rebounded with back-to-back birdies, made a couple of pars, then went back-to-back again on 16 and 17. He capped off the strong finish by sinking a 10-footer for par 4 on 18, after driving into the rough and still being 135 yards away in the rough following his second shot.

The round had started with Stroud finally playing well on a front nine that gave him trouble all week. Birdies at 2, 7 and 8 enabled him to make the turn in two-under 33.

That made him one under on the front for the week. His 34 on the back left him at 17 under on that nine.

All total, Stroud rolled in seven birdies on Sunday, leaving him with 25 for the week. Only one player in the field had more.
