Groves calls election for Wards 1, 3

GROVES — Two seats on the Groves City Council are up for election this November — the Ward 1 seat held by Chris Borne and the Ward 3 seat held by longtime councilmember Sidney Badon.

Councilmembers approved calling for the election during Monday’s meeting. The election will be held during the general election on Nov. 5.

Borne is new to council, having been appointed after former councilman Cross Coburn lost a recall election in November. The recall was brought against Coburn for behavior unbecoming of a councilmember after risqué photos of him taken from a private message with an unknown person through a dating site were sent to city hall and local media.

Borne was one of six people in Ward 1, including his wife, who submitted letters of interest for the seat after Coburn’s departure.

The city did not officially solicit letters for the seat. In a story that appeared in The Port Arthur News on Nov. 15, Groves City Manager D. Sosa confirmed that two letters were received and that interested persons could submit a letter to his office, which would be scanned in and turned over to councilmembers for consideration.

Filing for the Ward 1 and Ward 3 seats begins July 22 and ends Aug. 19.
