Needing to shoot 69 to make the cut Friday in the Rocket Mortgage Classic, Andrew Landry went that number two better and soared 58 places up the leaderboard into a tie for 43rd at the 36-hole mark.
The news was not so good for Landry’s fellow PNG ex Chris Stroud. After an opening 73, Stroud withdrew citing an eye infection. Stroud started the week having missed seven consecutive cuts and ranked 111 in Fed Ex points.
Nate Lashley, who got into the tournament as an alternate, backed up an opening 63 with a 67 for a 130 to continue to hold the lead. Texas A&M’s Cameron Champ shot 65 to moved into second place at 131.
Landry, playing the back nine first, was still on shaky ground with the cut after making the turn in one-under-35. Then he broke loose on what was the front nine, shooting 32 despite making a bogey on the final hole.
A birdie from 13-4 at the par 4, second got Landry rolling. He followed up with a birdie 2 from 12-7 at the fifth hole, then eagled the par 5, seventh from 27-8.
Landry added another birdie from 8-2 on the par 4, 8th before missing from 9-5 to make a bogey 4 and settle for 67.
