Initial reports suggested the driver, 25, was traveling north at a high rate of speed in a Chevrolet Camaro on FM 1135. The driver lost control of the vehicle, Troopers believe, struck the culvert and the vehicle vaulted into the air before flipping end-over-end onto the Interstate. The vehicle flipped across all eastbound traffic lanes of Interstate 10, then came to a rest on the center concrete barrier between the eastbound and westbound traffic lanes.

A female passenger, from Vidor, was taken by medical helicopter to St. Elizabeth hospital with serious injuries. She was wearing a seat belt at the time of the wreck, Troopers said.

Justice Hershel Stagner Jr. pronounced the driver dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt and was partially ejected from the vehicle.

Troopers said the deceased victim’s name would not be released until next of kin was notified.
