NEDERLAND — City Hall overflowed with family and friends of newly elected officials as Judge Brad Burnett swore in Mayor Don Albanese, Ward 3 Councilmember Emmett Holier and Ward 4 Councilmember Sylvia Root at City Hall on Monday.

The meeting began with the pre-election councilmembers approving the minutes for the previous agenda. Then, as their last act as city council, they approved the swearing in of the new members.

After the ceremony and photos, the newly elected officials took their new seats.

Albanese introduced the rest of the councilmembers and city employees in attendance before giving a public statement to former mayor R.A. “Dick” Nugent.

“I want to thank Mr. Nugent for all he has done for the city,” Albanese said. “I’m honored so much to have such a great friend.”

Albanese also admitted to having a few butterflies in his new seat at the center of the city council meeting.

“If my voice trembles or stutters, it’s because I’m a little nervous,” he said to the council members and those in attendance.

Voters elected Albanese over his opponent Jeff Ortiz in the election May 4. Hollier ran an uncontested race for the seat Albanese left when he announced he was running for mayor.

Root beat out David Guillot for the seat representing Ward 4, which was previously held by Craig Bellaire.

The new officials had a lengthy agenda in front of them, which included approving incentives for Brick Oven Pizza and Buckstin Brewery. The two locations are schedule to open later this year.

Buckstin Brewery received a $50,000 incentive while Brick Oven Pizza received an incentive worth $30,000.

The council elected Ward 2 Councilmember Billy Neal, who ran an unopposed race, as mayor pro-tem.

The next city council meeting is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. May 28 at City Hall.
