PORT NECHES — A Port Neches-Groves High School 11th grader who was assaulted during RiverFest is recovering from his injuries at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston.

The student, whose name has not been released, was involved in a verbal altercation around 10:20 p.m. Saturday somewhere near the restrooms and Tugboat Island in Port Neches Riverfront Park. The incident turned physical and it is believed that more than one person assaulted the victim.

“There were plenty of witnesses but no one wants to cooperate,” Port Neches Police Chief Paul Lemoine said.

The student does have a medical condition that causes seizures — something he had before the incident. Lemoine said he heard the student suffered a broken pelvis and other injuries. His current condition was not available as of Tuesday afternoon.

Fights between juveniles or young adults are not uncommon during the festival but the injuries are typically minor, he said.

Police have identified a person of interest in the aggravated assault but no arrests have been made. The incident remains under investigation.
