4th with you at Family Fun Day

The Museum of the Gulf Coast is touting a Star Wars theme — “May The 4th Be With You” — for Family Fun Day from 10-2 Saturday, and there’s lots more on the menu.

Museum Director Tom Neal said children who attend can have their photos taken with Star Wars characters, which always tugs at their interest, he said.

Family Fun Days were created to provide parents and children with a free event at the museum, located at 700 Procter St.

Neal said many area families are still battling back from financial setbacks incurred during Hurricane and Tropical Storm Harvey. Family Fun Days give those families and others the opportunity to tour the museum for free and participate in a host of kid-friendly attractions.

Also on the menu for Saturday are activities related to “Ugly Dolls,” directed by Beaumont native Kelly Asbury. The film opened in theaters Friday.

Asbury, included in the museum’s Notable People Hall of Fame, is an animator, screen writer, author and voice actor. He directed “Ugly Dolls,” and sent to the museums various items as giveaways at Saturday’s Family Fun Day.

Other Asbury directing credits include “Shrek2” and “Gnomeo & Juliet.”

He also contributed designs and storyboards for animated films that include “The Little Mermaid,” “Beauty and The Beast,” “The Nightmare before Christmas” and “Toy Story.”

The museum is accepting entries for its art contest, “Mysteries of the Deep,” through Friday. Winners will be revealed at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Judges include featured artists John Woodard and Monte Brickey, whose works will be on display.
