WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: UMBC hires Texas Southern’s Hayes

Texas Southern women’s basketball head coach Johnetta Hayes has been hired to the same position at Maryland-Baltimore County.

Hayes, a Houston native and Rice graduate who has family members in the Golden Triangle, went 115-73 with a SWAC tournament championship and NCAA tournament berth in 2017. Port Arthur native Joyce Kennerson, the 2018 SWAC player of the year, was the leader behind the Tigers’ run to that championship and was one of the nation’s leading scorers as a junior.

Texas Southern made four nationwide postseason tournaments under Hayes, including two WNIT appearances (2014, 2015) and a first-round win over Weber State in the 2018 Women’s Basketball Invitational. Hayes was SWAC coach of the year in 2015.

Hayes was hired as the permanent replacement for Phil Stern, who resigned on Feb. 22 (with three regular-season games remaining) after more than 16 seasons. Carlee Dewey filled the role in the interim and went 2-2, while the Retrievers finished 10-20 for the season (3-13 in the America East Conference).
