Good Friday was no time to rest at Memorial Stadium — but it was time for fun for young kids and the teenagers they look up to.

Because of a number of Memorial High School football players, little kids took the Titans’ playground in search of Easter eggs and the goodies inside them, like candy.

“Me and some of the guys, we had a group chat,” junior quarterback Brian Milton said. “We were talking about doing something that was never done for us when we were little when we looked up to the Titans. We were thinking Easter was coming up, so why not do it? It wouldn’t be a bad thing to put on for the kids.”

About 20 kids searched in and around the stadium for eggs, with Easter-themed kids’ music blaring through the public address system and Friday morning sunlight in the spring taking the place of Friday night lights in the fall.

“Brian had reached me when I was gone in Houston and kind of reached out,” Memorial head coach Brian Morgan said. “Him and some of the seniors coming up wanted to do something for the kids in Port Arthur. We just kind of threw some ideas around.”

The players who will be seniors this coming fall, including Milton, spearheaded the organization of the hunt, with some underclassmen and the coaching staff helping out. Former NFL player Danny Gorrer, who starred at Memorial, and current Louisiana Tech running back Elijah Hines came back and helped the younger kids look around for eggs of treats.

“I thought it was a big stride in showing leadership on the team,” Morgan said of the class of 2020. “So, I just wanted to make sure and tell them, ‘This is your deal. I’m going to make sure you got the resources and reached out to the people in the community that kind of donated.

“It was something they wanted to do, and I wanted to make sure they made it possible. I think it’s a real good sign for the leadership in the fall.”
