Port Arthur police Thursday were continuing to investigate a Ninth Avenue collision believed to be connected to two cars racing.

In an issued statement, police said they were called at 4:26 p.m. Wednesday to the 3600 block of Ninth Avenue where one of the two speeding vehicles had collided with a third vehicle driven by a 71-year-old Port Arthur resident. The elderly man who was driving the third vehicle in the rush hour collision suffered “serious injuries,” police said, and was taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.

Witnesses told police about the two vehicles that appeared to be racing at a high rate of speed.

The Port Arthur Police Criminal Investigations Division was investigating, police said late Wednesday.
