SOFTBALL: Bearkats take doubleheader from Cards

HUNTSVILLE — The Lamar softball team dropped a pair of games to Sam Houston State on Friday afternoon. The Cards were defeated, 5-2, in game one. LU and Sam Houston State battled to a 13-inning affair in game two, before the Bearkats came out on top, 3-2.

Lamar struggled getting the offense going in the first game of the doubleheader as they picked up one hit through five innings of play in the contest. The lone hit for the Red and White came in the top of the second inning with Savana Guidry reached on a bunt single before being left stranded on base.

In the bottom of the second inning, the Bearkats took advantage of one Cardinals error and took the lead. With a runner on second, Canada singled scoring one. On the next play, Canada stole third and scored on a Cardinals error.

The lead stretched to 5-0 in the bottom of the third inning. Again, SHSU took advantage of a Cardinal error that stretched out the inning. With two outs, and two on, White hit a three-run home run growing the lead to 5-0.

Both pitchers kept the teams off the scoreboard until the top of the sixth inning. With two outs, Shannon Klaus singled to left field. Shania Amir followed with the Cardinals’ second home run of the season; a two-run shot to left field.

Heading to the top of the seventh, Lamar trailed 5-2. After a strike out, Taylor Davis singled to center field. However, she would be stranded on base as the next two hitters struck out and LU dropped game one, 5-2.

In the contest, four different Owls collected one hit each. Shaina Amir collected both RBIs for the Red and White.

Erin Kyle picked up the loss for LU as she went six innings and only allowed one earned run. The Bearkats picked up six hits off Kyle.

Lamar scored the first run of game two, in the top of the second inning. Guidry picked up her first hit of the game on a single to center getting LU started. A sac bunt by Taylor Davis moved Guidry to third base. Kimberly Mattox hit a sac fly that scored Guidry putting LU ahead, 1-0.

Over the first four innings of the contest, Cards starter Aaliyah Ruiz limited the Bearkats offense to three hits. SHSU put two runners on in the bottom of the fourth, on two LU errors but they were left stranded on base.

In the top of the fourth, LU grew its lead to 2-0. With one out, and runners on the corner, Savana Mata hit a sac fly to left field that allowed Guidry to score. That would be the lone run Lamar would get in the fourth.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Bearkats offense slowly started to wake up. After a leadoff single by Fisher, Julia Voluntad relieved Ruiz. A sac bunt and a walk followed by a double by McDonald, scored two tying the game at 2-2.

After tying the game at 2-2, the pitching took over for both teams. From the sixth to the 10th inning of the contest, both the Cardinals and Bearkats combined for two hits and one walk.

In the bottom of the 13th inning, the Bearkats broke the tie. After a walk and a sac bunt, moved the runner to second base. After the Cards got a pop out for the second out of the inning. The Bearkats scored the winning run on a Cardinals error and LU dropped game two, 3-2, in 13 innings.

Guidry led the Cards at the plate in game two, as she had three hits. Amir added two hits and three Cards added one hit apiece in the contest.

Pitching 8 2/3 innings of relief, Julia Voluntad picked up the loss as she only allowed two runs, one earned and limited the Bearkats offense to five hits.

LU and SHSU conclude its three-game set at noon with a single contest at Bearkat Softball Complex.
