Kelly Meeuwsen smacked a go-ahead, two-run double to left center in the sixth inning, and Lamar finished a doubleheader sweep of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi with identical 5-4 scores in Beaumont on Friday.
Meeuwsen went 3 for 4 with three RBI, and Taylor Murphy hit 2 for 3 with two runs in the win.
A&M-Corpus Christi (4-23, 1-4 Southland) took a 4-2 lead with a three-run fourth inning, but Lamar (13-15, 4-1) responded with another run in the bottom of the fourth. The winning Cardinals had 10 hits to the Islanders’ nine and overcame three errors for the win.
Erin Kyle limited the Islanders to three hits in the final 3 1/3 innings for the win. Starter Julia Voluntad scattered six hits and three earned runs in the first 3 2/3.
Lamar won the first game in more dramatic fashion. Taylor Davis pushed a single to the right side to score Savana Guidry for the winning run in the bottom of the seventh. Shannon Klaus, Shaina Amir and Davis each had two hits.
Voluntad earned a relief win. She threw 3 1/3 innings and gave up only one earned run on two hits while striking out two.
Lamar and A&M-Corpus Christi will finish their conference series at 1 p.m. today. A “special friend” of the program, Abigail Arias, 6, will throw the ceremonial first pitch.
Abigail was diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2017 and beat it within seven months — only for the cancer to return. Doctors have said there is nothing else that can be done to beat it again, according to a Lamar news release.
Abigail is an honorary Texas Ranger and honorary member of the Freeport police department. She will arrive with a police escort to the field.
