Problems on the par 3s, and a devastating double bogey on his 14th hole, kept Andrew Landry from getting off to a promising start in the opening round of the Tournament Players Championship Thursday at TPC Sawgrass.

Landry, who played the back nine first, had to settle for a one-over-par 73 after making the turn in 34. He’s tied for 81st and may need something in the 60s on Friday to make the 36-hole cut.

The killer for Landry was a double bogey 6 on the par 4, 5th β€” his 14th hole. He got stuck in the left rough and needed four shots to get down from 28 feet. The Port Neches-Groves ex came to the hole one under and walked away one over.

Tommy Fleetwood and Keegan Bradley shot 65s to tie for the lead.

Landry had gotten off to a strong start with birdies on his second, fifth and eighth holes. But he kept losing momentum on the par 3s, making bogeys on three of them. He did birdie the par 3, 17th which enabled him to make the turn in two under.

Though he hit only 8 of 14 fairways, the Port Neches-Groves ex was on 14 of 18 greens in regulation which ranked him 12th in the field. But he took 32 putts and ranked 106 in the strokes gained putting stat.
