GIRLS BASKETBALL: Memorial’s Henry 21-5A coach of year

Memorial girls basketball coach Kevin Henry won the District 21-5A coach of the year honor.

The all-district teams and honors were revealed Wednesday.

Henry guided Memorial (17-12) to a share of the district championship with Barbers Hill and the Lady Titans’ first appearance in the UIL playoffs in three years. The Lady Titans were 8-19 the previous season.

One of Henry’s standouts, senior guard Dakayla Miller, was named the 21-5A defensive player of the year.

Memorial placed two on the first team: senior center Julia Sion and junior Jacqualyn Gibbs; and two on the second team: guard Denisha Anderson and forward Emily McElroy.

For Port Neches-Groves, coming off its first-ever playoff appearance, junior forward Mollee Priddy and junior guard Maylin Stampley earned first-team designation. Senior center Chelsea Carrillo of PNG was named to the second team.

Nederland center Cassidy Thomas made the first team, and teammate Kadajia Valsin earned second-team designation.

Other first-team members: Cleveland senior Manya Lyons; Dayton seniors Raylin Jenkins and Raven Maness; and from Barbers Hill senior Annie Carlile and junior Jazlyn Marcus.

Other second-teamers: From Barbers Hill sophomore Kaylee Hornberger and junior Alliece Semien; Vidor senior Elizaeth Torres; Dayton senior Kayleigh Davis and Cleveland senior Kayla Fletcher.

Local honorable mention players: from Memorial, senior Iyanna Brannon and junior Kaila Jackson; from Nederland, freshman Jenna Vo; and from NG, junior Britney Brevell, senior Holly Jones and senior Harlee Barnwell.

Jaelin Holden of Barbers Hill was crowned the district MVP. Chriseline Quirante of Vidor earned the offensive player of the year accolade and teammate Americus Guerrero-Erans was named newcomer of the year.
