PGA TOUR: Stroud, Landry struggle late at Riviera

Chris Stroud and Andrew Landry arrived early, stayed late and ultimately paid the price Friday, as the rain-drenched Genesis Open at Riviera Country Club slogged its way through an endless second round that probably won’t be complete until this afternoon.
Neither of the Port Neches-Groves exes hit a shot on Thursday, as roughly half the field managed to complete round one. That meant they arrived at sunrise Friday and were still in action until rain and impending darkness called a halt to play.
Stroud, after being four-under-par through 13 holes in what became an opening round two-under 69, finished the day one over after 29 holes. Landry, following a 71, got to two under through four holes of his second round, then made three bogeys and is also one over after 28 holes.
Faced with having to return to the course early on Saturday, both players face an uphill climb to make the projected cut of one under.
Not everybody struggled during the long day. Justin Thomas, 10 under through 30 holes, and Adam Scott, 10 under through 29 holes, are the co-leaders. Jordan Spieth, the first day leader with a 64, won’t start his second round until Saturday morning.
Stroud, coming off back-to-back top 10s, looked like he might do it again after making four birdies his first 13 holes and being tied for sixth. But a double bogey on his 14th hole blunted momentum. That led to playing his final 15 holes five over.
Landry, meanwhile, had three birdies against three bogeys in his morning round, and started the afternoon with birdies on his second and fifth holes.
Playing in deteriorating conditions, he would bogey three of his final five holes.
