PREP ROUNDUP: Titans, Eagles to meet in Dayton for No. 1

Seventh-ranked Memorial and eighth-ranked Barbers Hill will play for a No. 1 seed for the second time in eight days Friday.

This time, it’s the boys basketball teams that will square off for the third time.

Barbers Hill beat Nederland 48-36 in Mont Belvieu on Tuesday to win its share of the District 21-5A championship. Memorial, which won the second meeting over the Eagles in Port Arthur, had already completed its district schedule.

Last Friday, Barbers Hill’s girls team beat Memorial in Vidor for the top seed.

Both the Eagles (28-6) and Titans (24-6) finished 11-1 in 21-5A boys standings. Nederland (21-13, 7-5 in 21-5A) had already wrapped up third place.

No statistics from Tuesday’s game were available.

 

Cleveland 72, PNG 68, OT

It all comes down to another tiebreaker.

Cleveland’s Indians tied the game at 61 in the final 23 seconds of regulation and outscored Port Neches-Groves’ Indians 11-7 in the extra 4 minutes to force one more game for the fourth and final playoff seed from District 21-5A. That game will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at Lumberton High School.

Chance Brown had 33 points, A.J. Wheeler scored 21 and T.J. Waller dropped 14 for Cleveland (17-13, 5-7 in 21-5A), which earned two must-wins to keep its season alive.

PNG (17-14, 5-7), which has lost four straight, got 18 points from Tracy Smith, 17 from Trent Lee and 13 from Drake Rojas.

PNG’s Indians led 36-30 at halftime and were tied with the Cleveland Indians at 46-46 through three quarters.

In Sabine Pass, the Sharks defeated Deweyville to earn a spot in the 2A bi-district round.

 

BOYS SOCCER

PNG 2, Memorial 1

In Port Neches, Jose Ceja and Jason Lovejoy accounted for the Indians’ goals in a district win over the Titans.

Jadon Lovejoy made an assist for PNG (11-6-1, 3-1 in 21-5A).

 

GIRLS SOCCER

Nederland 6, Cleveland 0

In Cleveland, Meg Sheppard pulled the hat trick in the Bulldogs’ 12th regulation shutout of the season.

Hanna Foster, Skylar Thomassie and Jordan Minaldi completed the scoring for Nederland (13-1-2, 5-0 in 21-5A). Amber Borel earned the shutout.

Nederland will host Dayton at Prather Field on Friday.

 

PNG 3, Memorial 0

In Port Arthur, Kaylee Landry scored twice off free kicks as the Indians (10-4-4, 3-1 in 21-5A) rebounded from their first district loss to blank the Lady Titans.

Breeana Riggs scored first on an assist from Halley Smith.

 

SOFTBALL

PNG 11, Sulphur 0, 5 inn.

In Port Neches, seven Indians each had multiple base hits in a season-opening win over the Golden Tornadoes from Calcasieu Parish.

Freshman Jakeyla McDaniel smashed a home run in her first career at-bat. Sadie Shrestha smashed a triple, scored three runs and stole three bases, and Kasidee Sartin, Bayja Newby, Hannah Denman, Maylin Louvier and Cameron Niedenthal (two) each lined a double.

Niedenthal, who pitched a four-hit victory, went 3 for 4 and drove in a run. Sydnee Adams batted 2 for 4 in the win.

PNG will compete in the Brenham tournament this weekend.

 

Sabine Pass 8, Anahuac 3

In Anahuac, Jaizee Landry struck out 17 in a season-opening victory.

Sabine Pass will return to Anahuac for a tournament later this week.
