Lamar Institute of Technology public speaking instructor Donna Burnside has teamed up with several local organizations to help those affected by the partial government shutdown with a civic engagement project for her students.
In an issued statement from LIT, the class will collect donations from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at Sam’s Club, 1615 I-10 in Beaumont.
Burnside initially reached out to the local Coast Guard, who put the instructor in touch with the Golden Triangle Chapter, Chief Petty Officers Association, a nonprofit organization. The CPOA is hosting the donation with Burnside’s class. Students were required to share the Facebook post on social media to maximize visibility.
She also contacted Sam’s Club in Beaumont, her apartment complex in Nederland, The Avenue Apartments and Nederland Church of Christ. They will distribute flyers. Sam’s Club is donating a palette of water, detergent and paper towels.
Donations are requested to include:
- Non-perishable food items (cereal, canned goods, rice, pasta, etc.)
- Gas and grocery gift cards
- Paper products (paper towels, toilet paper, etc.)
- Household supplies (laundry and dish detergent, toothpaste, soap, shampoo)
- Baby supplies (diapers, wipes, formula)
- Gift cards to local restaurants
Those interested in donating may bring items to LIT Building T5, Room 103 or email dburnside@lit.edu.
Burnside said, “All donations, big or small, will make a difference.”
