Commissioners schedule workshop on concession stands

The Jefferson County commissioners will meet with LaBiche Architectural Group again Monday, so the group has time to find answers to some of the commissioners’ lingering questions.
The commissioners met with the group Tuesday after commissioners’ court to discuss construction plans for the Ford Park baseball field concession stands.
County Judge Jeff Branick scheduled a second workshop next week after questions about the concession stand’s ability to function while under construction and energy use were brought up.
“I have a real problem with the overall cost on this,” Precinct 1 Commissioner Eddie Arnold said.
All of the commissioners expressed concerns about estimates on the amount of power that would be required to run the new concession stands.
Principal for the group Greg Wall said the new design would present a more modern, open concept like those seen in most sporting arenas.
“With any construction project, you have to look at all angles,” Precinct 2 Commissioner Brent Weaver said. “Was it looked at and determined that there was no way to upgrade (the existing) facility and create a more modern model, even if it expanded the footprint?”
A group spokesman said expanding the original design was not considered.
Wall said an expansion would cause the stand to shut down for nearly half a year.
Weaver and Precinct 3 Commissioner Michael Sinegal said the group would have to find a way to work around the schedule.
“There is a plan that can be done,” Weaver said. “It might have to be done offseason.”
However, the fields only have about five weeks from the middle of December to the beginning of February when fields aren’t used, Branick said. The construction is estimated to take up to six months.
Branick and the commissioners wanted information from the engineer about cost efficiencies and also the feasibility of maintain the concession stand services during construction.
A time for the next workshop was not determined.
Commissioner’s court will begin at 1:30 p.m. Monday.
