PORT NECHES — Elvis himself would have been proud to snack on the sandwich named in his honor at The Avenue Coffee and Café in Port Neches.
In honor of what would have been The King’s 84th birthday on Tuesday, the newly opened coffee shop decided to bring “The Elvis” — a grilled sandwich with peanut butter, bacon and bananas — to the forefront.
Alicia Huber, one of the co-owners of the shop, stepped to the grill and created the picture perfect dish, saying the sandwich isn’t new to the menu.
“Our landlady is a huge Elvis fan,” Huber said. “And all our sandwiches are grilled so when we came up with it (The Elvis) we had the fun flavors and grilling it gave it a whole new palette of flavors.”
There are obviously other sandwiches on the menu, including one with turkey and a peach jam of sorts. Kelsley Stansbury, a new customer, was amazed at the sandwich. She opted to have the peach to the side but realized it paired well with the turkey and ended up dipping the diagonally cut grilled sandwich into the peach mixture.
“This is my first time here and I will be back,” Stansbury said. “I’ve been wanting to come and try this place. I can see myself going a lot on Tuesdays and Thursdays.”
The shop serves a variety of coffees, all from Texas roasters, and tea, which also comes from a Texas company. A table near the front of the shop features different swag such as coffee cups, glasses and T-shirts along with coffees and more.
The Avenue Coffee and Café is located at 1226 Port Neches Ave., Port Neches and is open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.
