David Whittington Jr., the man charged with shooting his estranged girlfriend in the chest and head turned himself in at the Department of Public Safety building in Anahuac on Thursday.

According to police, Whittington allegedly shot the 35-year-old woman in the chest and head with a small caliber handgun Dec. 12.

The incident occurred at 6:11 a.m. in the 1100 block of Detroit. The victim was transported to The Medical Center of Southeast Texas by private vehicle, then transported by private ambulance to St. Elizabeth’s in Beaumont where she underwent surgery.

Later that day, a warrant was issued for the arrest of Whittington for aggravated assault family violence and bond was set for $250,000.

Whittington was transported to Jefferson County jail, where he will await trail. Nederland Assistant Police Chief Andrew Arnold said he is happy to have Whittington off the streets.

“I’m glad the family can now get some closure,” he said. “It’s great that they don’t have to worry about him anymore.”

The identity of the victim was not released, but Arnold said she is expected to make a full recovery.
