MEN’S BASKETBALL: Lamar’s Garth receives Southland player of week honor

FRISCO – Lamar senior guard Nick Garth has been named Southland Conference Player of the Week, league officials announced Thursday afternoon. It marks the first time this season a Cardinal has received the award.
Garth averaged 30.0 points, 3.0 assists, 2.5 steals and 1.5 rebounds per game while leading the Cardinals (6-6) to a 2-0 record last week. Garth shot 20-of-31 (.645) from the field and 12-of-16 (.750) from three-point range in the two contests. He was also a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line.
Garth opened the week with a career performance against Texas Southern. The Houston native scored a career-high 36 points in the victory over a hot TSU squad, while shooting a near perfect 8-of-9 (.889) from three-point range. He also added three assists and two steals against the Tigers. Garth followed that up with 24-point performance against Howard Payne two nights later.
Garth is currently second on the team and ranked third in Southland averaging 15.3 points per game. The school’s all-time leader in three-point field goals, Garth is third in the league in three-point field-goal percentage (.397) and three-point field goals per game (2.6 pg).
The Cardinals return to action Saturday when they will be back in the Montagne Center to host Champion Christian. Saturday’s game will tip off at 2 p.m. and can be heard live on Newstalk 560 KLVI. It will also be streamed live on ESPN+. The Cardinals enter the contest looking to sweep the current three-game homestand.
