After a successful, initial lighted golf cart parade, Nederland Economic Development Corp. Executive Director Kay DeCuir said the city should look forward to another, similar parade next year.

“It was a blast,” she said. “It was kind of chilly. (The decorated golf carts) way surpassed my expectations. We look forward to next year and making it bigger and better.”

DeCuir said 20 golf carts participated in the parade, which lasted about 90 minutes.

“We had one that was like Santa’s sleigh (which won a trophy for Most Creative),” DeCuir said. “They had reindeer out in front of the sleigh. We had one called Winter Wonderland (which won a trophy for Most Festive) and it had penguins in the back of it and it had blue lights.”

One cart presented a Grinch theme complete with an upside down Christmas tree in a sack full of presents and a Grinch driving the cart; it won for Best Decorated. Best Theme went to Sassy Trendz.

“Sassy Trendz had a golf cart with wheels decorated like peppermints,” DeCuir said. “They had candy canes all over it. The sides of the cart were striped. Everywhere you looked was candy.”

DeCuir said she has already heard from people ready to compete
next year.

“We some people that had lights on their cart but didn’t realize the level of competition,” DeCuir said. “They already told me what they are going to do next year. They told me they were coming back strong.

“There were people that didn’t know about the parade and were waving as we went by and they said they were going to do it next year. They said their kids were jealous or upset because they didn’t get to participate.”

Contest winners

The Nederland EDC announced winners of the decorated home and business contest. Winners were notified and cash prizes were delivered Thursday.

“It really made a difference when we had lights to look at (during the parade),” DeCuir said. “We hope more people will light up around the town next year so that we will be able to see more homes when we go on our parade next year.”
