Staff report
Port Arthur police revealed they conducted an operation involving inspections of gaming establishments in this city Friday, but listed no businesses or individual involved.
In an issued statement, the department said, “Through the course of these inspections numerous city ordinance violations were discovered.
Citations were issued totaling 63 individual charges.”
The department said it would continue to inspect gaming sites regularly.
Detective Mike Hebert recently appeared before the City Council to say that the number of known gaming sites in the city has fallen from 98 three years ago to 39. Most have closed because of fire code violations.
Some have been sites for crime. From June 7, 2017 to June 7, 2018 there were 1,667 calls for police service at the sites, with 20 aggravated robberies and 21 aggravated assaults.
Police continue to meet with city officials for ways to better govern and oversee the sites.
