Staff report

A Jefferson County grand jury Wednesday indicted a Beaumont woman accused of spending more than $100,000 of her elderly, impaired mother’s resources over a period of six years.

Court documents said June Bradley Sonn, 58, was accused of exploitation of an elderly individual. An arrest affidavit said Sonn was granted power of attorney over her mother’s affairs in 2010, which is when her two siblings said their sister’s spending habits changed. They said she bought a house, new flooring, fencing, took expensive vacations and spent lavishly.

The affidavit said the suspect’s sister gained custody of their mother, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, in 2016, and eventually gained access to bank documents that showed where the mother’s money was spent.

Adult Protective Services investigated, and determined that the suspect spent at least $111,437.30 of her mother’s money for her own benefit, the affidavit said.
