Julia Sion’s shooting touch came right on time for Memorial.
The senior center nailed 7 of 8 shots from the floor and finished with a game-high 17 points Tuesday in a 46-34 girls basketball win over Nederland to begin District 21-5A play. Sion also made 3 of 5 free throws and pulled down seven rebounds.
Memorial (1-0 in 21-5A) made 14 of 31 shots from the field for 45.2 percent but had to overcome shooting 3 for 17 from three-point range to win.
Sion was one of eight Titans to score. Dakayla Miller had 12 points.
Da’reyale Jones led Nederland (5-10, 0-1) with 12 points.
Barbers Hill will visit Nederland on Friday and Memorial next Tuesday.
PNG 44, Huffman 35
In Port Neches, Mollee Priddy stole the show, so to speak.
The junior had 22 points and five steals, allowing Port Neches-Groves (10-6) to pull off a non-district home win over the Falcons. Chelsea Carrillo had 10 points in the win, which started a four-game home stand.
PNG coach Kara Skinner was happy with the rebounding, ball movement and transition offense, which she said gave the Indians a “big advantage.”
PNG will start 21-5A play Friday against Cleveland. Only the junior varsity and varsity will play, starting at 5 p.m.
Sabine Pass 50, Tekoa Academy 26 (Monday)
At Sabine Pass, Yainn Zuniga shot 50 percent from the floor and had 14 points to lead the Sharks (5-4) to a rout of the Cougars.
Joanna Smolsky made 4 of 5 (80 percent) from the floor and added eight points for Sabine Pass. Nevaeh Jones and Jamesia Jones each had nine and Jaizee Landry also scored eight.
I. Clark had 11 points to lead Tekoa.
Tekoa will host Bob Hope on Friday at the Port Arthur Recreation Center, 1308 Ninth Ave. Sabine Pass will visit Bob Hope next Tuesday.
BOYS
PNG 74, Hamshire-Fannett 38
In Hamshire, the Indians (8-7) put an end to a four-game losing streak and jumped on the Longhorns early with a 22-9 first-quarter lead.
Drake Rojas led PNG with 19 points. Tracy Smith scored 12 and Trent Lee had 11.
PNG will begin 21-5A action at Dayton next Tuesday.
Tekoa 63, Sabine Pass 49
At Sabine Pass, Lesley Harmanson’s double-double and Jailan Ardoin’s near double-double helped the Cougars take a double-digit victory.
Harmanson had 12 points, 11 rebounds, two blocks and two steals, and Ardoin added 17 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Ardoin led the Cougars (10-1) with 17 points, pulled down nine rebounds and had three steals.
Darryl Prevost also scored 10 points. Kevin Laday and Robert Scott each added eight points, with Scott also pulling down nine rebounds and making four steals.
Harold James of Sabine Pass led all scorers with 19 points.
Tekoa led 30-24 at halftime before a solid half-court defense allowed the Cougars to outscore the Sharks 20-6.
Bridge City 83, Evadale 47
In Bridge City, Kolten Weeks led the Cardinals’ onslaught of the Rebels scoring 21 points.
Grant Boudreaux had 14 points and Austin Richardson netted 11 for Bridge City (7-8), which will visit Sabine Pass on Friday.
Nederland 48, West Brook 41
In Nederland, West Brook avenged its Dec. 1 loss in the championship of the Nederland/YMBL Classic.
Hayden Hefner had 19 points for the Bulldogs, who will play Silsbee at 3 p.m. Saturday. The game has been moved from Friday because of Silsbee’s state football semifinal.
