Councilmembers approved scheduling a Council On Dangerous and Empty Structures hearing to be held Jan. 7 after the regularly scheduled council meeting. At that time there will be an update on each of the properties before a decision is made.

“There is an option to work with the city to tear down the structure if they want. If they want it torn down the city will pay the tipping fee for removal of demolition or they can bring it up to code by meeting with the building official and give him a rough timeline of what they are going to do and when they are going to do it,” Sosa said. “We will work with them. Even if they come to the CODES hearing, if they decide to try and put it back in shape with a reasonable time line.”

But therein lies the problem.

“Some of these have been there (vacant) for well over a year, some have been burned out and we have a neighborhood who’s saying ‘How long do I have to look at this?’”

Sosa said the city wants to be fair and reasonable to all parties involved.
