BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Titans come up short in opener

Reigining UIL 5A state champion Memorial opened the boys basketball season Saturday testing itself against another state championship team, and it wasn’t Silsbee.

That meeting will come in Port Arthur next Saturday.

TAPPS 6A champion Tomball Concordia Lutheran, which went 43-1 last season, held off Memorial 69-62 at the Campbell Center in Aldine. The Titans are beginning the season with a two-game swing in the Houston area before opening the home slate against UIL 4A champ Silsbee the day after Memorial’s home playoff game against Richmond Foster.

Amaree Abrams scored 22 points, Kenneth Lofton Jr. had 16 and Nate Clover scored 12 for the Titans, who visit 6A Cypress Lakes for 7:30 p.m. tipoff Tuesday.

PNG 46, West Orange-Stark 37 (Fri.)

In Port Neches, the Indians improved to 2-0 thanks in part to Shelby Letulle’s fourth-quarter play.

Letulle made 5 of 8 free throws and hit a field goal for seven of her nine points. Maylin Stampley led PNG with 15 points (three 3-point baskets) and Mollee Priddy added seven points.

PNG will visit Jasper on Tuesday.

Sabine Pass 44, Bob Hope 7

In Sabine Pass, the Sharks went perfect from three-point range (4-0) and Nevaeh Jones scored a game-high 15 points in the Sharks’ 37-point rout over crosstown rival Bob Hope to open the season.

Yainn Zuniga had nine points and Jamesia Jones scored eight.

Esmeralda Cruz led the Eagles with eight points.
