JUCO BASKETBALL: Titan trio each reach double figures in Seahawks’ debut

For a college debut, the nucleus behind Memorial’s run to the 5A boys basketball state championship made the Port Arthur crowd proud again.

Thailan Wesley, Darion Chatman and Jamyus Jones were among seven Seahawks scoring in double figures Thursday night, as Lamar State opened the season with a 113-52 victory over prep-school program Up Tempo Basketball at the Carl Parker Center.

Wesley shot 4 for 6 from the floor, making 3 of 5 from three-point range, and had 11 points to lead the former Titans. Wesley also had four assists and three rebounds.

Darion Chatman, last March’s 5A state tournament MVP, and Jamyus Jones each scored 10 points. Chatman added six rebounds and four steals and shot 4 for 5 (2 for 2 from the arc). Jones also made a pair of three-point shots.

Christavious Thomas led the Seahawks with 14 points, hitting 5 of 7 from the floor. Devin Ellis added 12, including a 6-for-6 free throw shooting effort, Devaughn Thomas scored 11 points and added two steals, and Colin Just also totaled 10 points and six rebounds.

At halftime, Memorial’s team was presented with a team ball in recognition of the state championship. Jones, Chatman and Wesley presented the ball to the Titans.

Lamar State will resume action in the Texas East-West Challenge in Lewisville. Lamar State will take on Howard College at 10 a.m. Saturday and Clarendon College at 10 a.m. Sunday.
