The anticipation built for thousands of Port Arthur residents who tuned in last Tuesday, joining the millions of viewers nationwide, as DeAndre Nico walked to the stage of The Voice.

Judges and celebrity judges Adam Levine, Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson and Blake Shelton all had their backs to DeAndre as he started to sing his rendition of “When I was your Man” by Bruno Mars.

The television audience got a glimpse of Port Arthur and the impact tropical storm Harvey had on DeAndre’s hometown during his introduction. DeAndre spoke about how the storm affected not only his family, but also thousands of other citizens across our community.

For those that don’t know, The Voice is a televised talent contest where contestants are judged on their singing voice only, during the “blind auditions.” Judges sit at the end of the stage in large chairs, turned so their backs are to the contestant, and unable to see who’s singing until they choose to add this person to the team of singers they are each compiling.

DeAndre’s was the last performance of the night. And in typical form, the show kept the best for last. DeAndre was nothing short of phenomenal. Singing as if the pent-up emotions over the past year were flowing out of his mouth with every word, tone and melodic run, DeAndre delivered a performance viewers will not soon forget.

And a performance that made Port Arthur residents proud.

His eyes closed through much of the song, he was unable see the respect and excitement by the four judges as they all turned their chairs, wanting a chance to have DeAndre on their team. Maroon 5 lead singer Adam Levine was standing.

Regular viewers know that a four-seat turn by all judges is not a typical occurrence on The Voice. It does not happen to all contestants. In fact, some contestants don’t get one chair to turn, ending their hopes of becoming a star on the TV show, but not so for DeAndre.

As is customary on the show, judges joke back and forth while trying to entice the contestant to choose them as their coach and mentor for the remainder of the season. In the end, DeAndrea Nico chose Adam Levine.

It takes courage to follow your dream. It takes patience to know that your dream may take a while to unfold and take its rightful place in your life.

So enjoy the ride, young man, for you have been given a gift that is truly amazing. Thank you for sharing that gift with the world. We will be watching and supporting you as your star is lifted!
