FOOTBALL: Chaney goes over 100-yard mark again in Titans’ rout of Marlins

Published 10:46 pm Friday, September 7, 2018

Branden Chaney rushed 22 times for 111 yards in just his second varsity game at Memorial.

Last week, he turned in 104 yards.

Chaney added a touchdown in the third quarter Friday, and Memorial cruised past Houston Madison 47-14 to start 2-0 on the season, both games inside Memorial Stadium.

There’s a reason Memorial coach Brian Morgan named Chaney the school’s football athlete of the week.

The Titans were fortunate to wrap up their evening before 10 p.m. on a night when many games across Texas were postponed due to lightning.

Neither team got on the scoreboard until 5 seconds into the second quarter, when Madison’s DeShawn Davis punched in a 6-yard run leading to a 1-yard Chase Garrison run. The play before, Garrison completed a 38-yarder to Chris Hill. Garrison’s pass was underthrown and Hill had to play defender for a moment before being able to strip ball from defensive back Jatavian Neal.

Memorial’s only drive of the first quarter ended with a punt, but it was set up by a Jaylen LaPoint interception off the deflection of a teammate.

The Titans then scored on their next two series. A 35-yard kickoff return by Chaney put Memorial at the Madison 44, and Chaney ran three times for 15 yards on a five-play drive ending with Teajawon Mack’s 10-yard catch from the backfield.

A shanked punt set up Memorial at its own 31. Chaney gained 26 yards on the first three plays, and two plays later Tavion Gipson hauled in a 23-yard catch from Kam Ladia with 5:17 left before intermission.

Kason Williams (10 carries for 105 yards) and Jayven Jean-Louis (three carries, 14 yards) each scored on a touchdown run.

Ladia finished 5-of-14 passing for 45 yards and the two TDs with an interception by Charlie Jones. For Madison, Garrison completed 3 of 6 passes for 54 yards before giving way to Jaden Holiday in the second half. Holiday went 3 for 10 for 74 yards, connecting with Hill for 52 yards on the last TD of the game with 2:14 left.

SPECIAL TEAM HIGHLIGHTS AND LOWLIGHTS

Memorial junior Keoni Evans snatched the ball before Madison’s punter, who wasn’t listed, could boot it in the fourth quarter. Evans then took it back 33 yards for a touchdown.

Memorial had an extra point attempt blocked and another come up no good early on. Madison missed an extra point, shanked three punts — one of which actually took a fortuitous bounce into Titans territory — and blocked one of the Titans’ punts.

THE GAME CHANGED WHEN …

Junior David Moore recovered a fumble from 20 yards out with 3:27 left before halftime to put the Titans up 19-6, ending the Marlins’ hopes of tying the game.

THE GAME BALL GOES TO …

Memorial’s defense for causing three turnovers, including two fumbles, and bringing pressure to force Madison into shanked punts.

NEXT UP …

Madison will visit Houston Northside next Friday. Memorial will meet Beaumont United at the Beaumont ISD Memorial Stadium next Saturday.

VINCENT UPDATE

Memorial assistant coach Kary Vincent Sr. was acknowledged before the national anthem. Vincent has been hospitalized since Sunday with pneumonia, and Morgan said afterward he heard Vincent has shown signs of improvement.
