CROSS COUNTRY: MORTERA WINS CARDINAL CLASSIC

Blake Mortera of Nederland got off to a fast start to the season and won the 5A individual boys title at the Bridge City Cardinal Classic on Saturday.

Mortera’s 17 minutes, 23.86 seconds was the only sub-18 minute time. He finished more than 30 seconds ahead of runner-up Daniel Armenta of Barbers Hill.

It was Barbers Hill, however, that took the 5A team title with 28 points. Dayton was second with 49, followed by Nederland (72), Port Neches-Groves (88) and Vidor (126).

Barbers Hill also won the 5A girls team title. Silsbee in 4A-under boys and Lumberton in 4A-under girls also took titles, with Bridge City’s girls coming in second.

Maddison Helm of Orangefield won the 4A-under individual girls title, with Kaylen Smith coming in second and Katelynn Helm third.
