GROVES — Police in Groves are trying to find out what led to a man being shot in the neck with a high velocity rifle on Monday.

Police learned of the shooting around 6:45 p.m. from Port Arthur Police after the victim was brought to St. Mary Hospital in Port Arthur by private vehicle.

“He was shot by what appears to be a high velocity rifle described by witnesses as a possible AR15,” City Marshal Norman Reynolds said.

Reynolds said there is a language barrier but police have learned that the victim had been a passenger in a truck with another man and had first encountered the suspects at a convenience store on 25th Street and Main Avenue. The suspects yelled something at him and the shooting happened on Ruby just off 25th Street.

The suspects were in a Kia SUV and the shooter got out of the Kia wearing a mask and fired at least two rounds, he said.

“There have been conflicting stories between the victim and the witnesses in the neighborhood,” he said.

Police said the victim had been working on a residence in Groves.
