NEDERLAND — Former Nederland Mayor Pro Tem and City Councilmember Bert Rogers died at 83 Wednesday. Rogers was an active citizen of the city serving on the Nederland ISD Board of Trustees for seven years and as a city council member for 10 years. He also taught at Nederland ISD for two years.

Rogers served temporarily as Nederland mayor when current Mayor R. A. “Dick” Nugent was recovering from surgery.

Rogers served six months in the U.S. Army and 6 ½ years in the reserves.

Rogers was a member of the Foundation Board for the Mid-County Senior Citizens Center, board member for the Nederland Education Foundation and was part of the Nederland All Sports Booster Club. Rogers also served two stints with the Nederland Economic Development Corp. from 2005-2011 and 2013-2018.

“Bert was a good councilmember,” City Manager Chris Duque said. “He was very focused on the numbers part of it. He probably asked the most questions about the budget when he was on council. He had always questions for me and the finance director.

“He wanted to make sure he understood. He was very focused on wanting to do the best he could for the employees and the community.”
