FOOTBALL: West Brook-PNG scrimmage now Thursday, designated as benefit

PORT NECHES — When West Brook and Port Neches-Groves scrimmage Thursday, Indians coach Brandon Faircloth will be happy for two reasons.

“… I’ll be pretty happy because this time last year, my house was flooding right after we canceled that scrimmage,” he said. “We’ll be out there playing Thursday night, and I will be really excited to be out there.”

The two teams were scheduled to rehearse just days before Tropical Storm Harvey impacted Jefferson County. Not only will they get to scrimmage at PNG’s Reservation at Thursday, the meeting has also been designated as the Texas High School Coaches Education Foundation “Our Day to Shine” game.

Admission to the scrimmage will be $1. All proceeds will be donated to the THSCEF Benevolence Fund, which was established by the Texas High School Coaches Association to assist athletes and coaches with special needs or hardships. To date, more than 900 schools have participated in “Our Day to Shine” and have raised more than $383,000, more than $382,000 of which has been paid to athletes and coaches with special needs.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. It is one of three scrimmages involving teams in The News coverage area that evening. Bridge City will play at Hamshire-Fannett starting at 5, and Nederland will host Memorial at 6:30.

Hamshire-Fannett will begin the season against Hughes Springs in Center, located between Jasper and Carthage, on Aug. 30. Aug. 31 will be the first regular-season date for PNG (home vs. Silsbee), Memorial (home vs. Deer Park), Nederland (at West Orange-Stark), Sabine Pass (at Pasadena First Baptist) and Bridge City (at Diboll).
