BEAUMONT — The Lamar football team opened its third week of practice Saturday morning with a scrimmage at Provost Umphrey Stadium – its second of preseason camp. The game-type scrimmage also had officials working the game.

“I thought we had too many penalties and those have to be eliminated,” said LU head coach Mike Schultz. “It’s unacceptable to have that many penalties.

“When you evaluate a scrimmage, it’s always a going to be a good and bad situation. On the good side, the offense is not turning the ball over. They’re really protecting the football, but on the flip side the defense isn’t causing turnovers. You want to be happy for the offense, but the defense has to start getting picks and strips.”

The offense scored on two of its first three possessions, before the defense turned the momentum around. On the next three possessions, the defense recorded stops, including two three-and-outs.

The offense carried the football 24 times for 110 yards and two touchdowns. Transfer A.J. Walker recorded seven carries for 17 tough yards, including a 9-yard run for a score. The Cardinals other rushing TD came on a 22-yard scamper from quarterback Darrel Colbert Jr.

The signal callers finished the day 12 of 22 for 277 yards and three touchdowns. Colbert started with the ones and completed 3 of 5 passes for 58 yards and a touchdown, while Jordan Hoy was 7 of 10 for 171 yards and two touchdowns. Redshirt sophomore Adam Morse of Groves was 2 for 5 for 48 yards. Redshirt freshman Jack Dallas of Orange also got some work during Saturday’s scrimmage.

One of Hoy’s two touchdown passes was to Hamshire-Fannett graduate Kendrick King in the back of the end zone from 18 yards out. It was a play that appeared to heading for a loss of yards before Hoy’s ability to scramble kept the play alive long enough for King to sneak into the end zone.

Junior Kevin O’Neill led the defense with five tackles, including one for a loss. Classmate James Jeffery and senior Davon Jernigan each added four stops. One Jeffery’s tackles was for a loss. Junior Daniel Crosley finished the day with two tackles, including one for a loss and a quarterback hurry.

The Cardinals will take Sunday off before returning to the practice field Monday. Big Red kicks off the season Saturday, Sept. 1 at home against Kentucky Christian.
