Take 2 for the Symphony: SOST to return for Christmas concert

Lightning will strike twice — that’s a good thing — with the Symphony of Southeast Texas in 2018.
SOST played a May 11 concert here, drawing a packed house at Lamar State College Port Arthur, the first concert the regional, professional symphony had played here in recent memory.
The symphony and Motiva Enterprises, one of the sponsors of the spring concert, were pleased enough with attendance and enthusiasm to send the symphony forth for a second Port Arthur appearance this year, this time for a Christmas concert at 7 p.m. Dec. 18 at Woodrow Wilson Early College High School. The venue seats about 1,000.
Like the May concert, “The Sounds of Christmas” will also be free to the public.
Maestro Chelsea Tipton will lead the symphony in an hourlong program of Christmas favorites, according to a statement issued Wednesday by the SOST.
Port Arthur Memorial High School’s choir will perform with the symphony under the direction of Lonnie Reed.
“The evening promises to be full of lovely seasonal music, a sing-a-long, a chance to visit with Santa and more Port Arthur surprises,” the SOST said in an issued statement.
SOST executive director Doug Fair said Christmas concerts are a “big favorite” for Tipton and the event, which is scheduled on a Tuesday, will feature open seating for the public.
The regional symphony, based in Beaumont, is in its 66th season and performs a subscription concert schedule, does educational programs and holds other concerts.
The symphony seasons opens at 7:30 Sept. 15 at the Julie Rogers Theatre for the Performing Arts in Beaumont. The program is “New York, New York, Jazz Meets Classics.”
